Elton/Britney "Hold Me Closer" debuts at #6 on Billboard Hot 100

Plus, Steve Lacy‘s “Bad Habit” rises to a new No. 2 Hot 100 best and Elton John and Britney Spears‘ “Hold Me Closer” bounds onto the chart at No. 6. The latter, the latest mash-up of John classics, marks his 29th Hot 100 top 10 and Spears’ 14th, and her first in nearly 10 years. Earlier this year, John added his first top 10 since 1998, when his previous multi-song reworking of his own catalog, “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix),” with Dua Lipa, reached No. 7.

How the latest remix "Hold Me Closer" all came together...

Pretty interesting read from Variety on how the "Hold Me Closer" remix was put together including using a mostly unheard guitar lick within the recording of Tiny Dancer played by Caleb Quaye.  I believe the guitar part referenced by Andrew Watt can be heard isolated in Rick Beato's "Tiny Dancer" episode of "What Makes This Song Great"

Last night on Twitter fans of Britney Spears lost the collective minds over the alleged leak of the "Hold Me Closer" duet be her and Elton John. Most fans were upset over the leak claiming Britney deserves to release the song on her own timetable since it's her first new music since 2016.  It was all quite comical.

Elton working with PNAU on followup to "Cold Heart"

Not sure how I feel about this.  I thought "Cold Heart" was dreadful when I first heard it and its still on the charts nearly a year later and has become Elton's biggest hit in decades. Now my opinion is it's fine.  I'll listen if it comes on the radio but I don't choose to listen to it. I suppose it's great that the younger generations are listening to Elton again but I figured it was a one-off success.

Now its reported he is working with PNAU on a followup that may come out next month for the summer with a "secret superstar' presumably a current popular artist.

Madman Box Set Review

Review: Elton John’s ‘Madman Across The Water’ Gets the Lavish Expanded Treatment to Celebrate 50th Anniversary

I actually think it’s the most American record we ever made, says Elton John’s lyricist Bernie Taupin in the introduction to the hard-bound 104-page book that comes with this lavish, “super deluxe” 50th-anniversary reissue of Madman Across the Water (November 1971). It’s an overview, a time capsule of that era…it’s still wonderfully evocative. The album is like an American road trip.

Billboard: The 75 Best Elton John Songs, hits and deep cuts

Let the arguments begin!

The Top 10 is not that surprising although the #1 song is not what I expected.  I love it but its not the typical #1 song chosen in these types of lists.

Going through the list I am pleasantly surprised by many of the deep cuts that have been included.  Dare I say impressive.

Elton John's 'Lockdown Sessions' is a masterpiece

Elton John - The Lockdown Sessions (cd) : Target

Feb. 15—Full disclosure: I am a huge Elton John fan. The singer/songwriter may have bigger fans — the ones who slip into the fanatics category, perhaps — but not many.

It started with the release of "Madman Across the Water" in 1971, which led me back to "Empty Sky," "Elton John," "11-17-70" and the "Friends" soundtrack, and it's included everything since.

Elton rocks North Little Rock

The singer finally made it to North Little Rock on Saturday, performing for an adoring, sold-out crowd of 15,482 at Simmons Bank Arena.

John's "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" tour was originally scheduled to stop here on July 3, 2020, but the first wave of the pandemic scuttled those plans.

And things weren't looking too good last week, when the 74-year-old rocker, who was fully vaccinated and boosted, tested positive for covid-19 and postponed a pair of shows in Dallas. Reports were that Sir Elton's symptoms were mild, and though he seemed a bit frail the few times he moved around the stage Saturday night, his voice was in fine form.
